Sadly, I don't think car-free cities are possible in the United States. And it's because of four simple words: Americans with Disabilities Act.
Don't get me wrong. I am not blaming people with handicaps for this. People with disabilities will claim that they must have a car and be able to park it as close to their home, work, shopping, etc. as possible because their mobility is impaired. Right there we're no longer car-free. Then the lazy, the MFFYs, the self-righteous, they'll all claim they too have a "right" to being as close to their cars as possible. By the time we're finished making exceptions for everyone, we're just back to where we started.
Again, not blaming people with limited mobility and they have a case. It's the people who will decide being 10 pounds overweight qualifies them too.
