Driven to Dispair - PBS NOW

Wonderful analysis of exurbia and rethinking transit in the USA.

With gas prices spiking and home values crumbling, the American working class dream of a cheap commute to work from ever-appreciating houses on the fringes of suburbia has become more like an American nightmare. NOW on PBS, with Blueprint America, examines this crisis through the example of southern California.

just finished watching the episode. it really is a car culture out there, but unfortunately, its more a way of life than just a hunk of metal that has to be faced.

the sooner people stop being afraid of riding a bus with "strangers", the sooner this will be a country with citizens in communities instead of consumers in suburbia.

People are afraid of strangers until they meet a few, and then realize they actually live in a community.

Transit creates civilization.
