California passed a bond measure in the last election for a high speed rail system to to connect LA and San Francisco. Its just in the design stage now, but you have to start somewhere. When completed it should be many hours faster than the existing Amtrak service.
Yay. I voted for it (Prop 1 on the longest ballot ever). Further down in this blog Brian S. posted on the first segment of the plan - Merced to Bakersfield, I think? Exciting.
