It's definitely possible to live without a car. Within the city, riding a bicycle or the bus works great.
Getting out of town is the tough part. Until recently, the only viable way to do so was Greyhound or Amtrak. I'm on a crusade to change that with a new service (still in Beta) my company recently unveiled called Ridester.com.
It's basically an Ebay-like marketplace for passenger space. If people are driving from one town to another, they can finally sell their empty passenger space to people traveling along the same route who are willing to pay the driver's price. Pretty simple. Pretty powerful.
I've also been Blogging about it.
