Taxing SUV pollution in the UK

Owners of fuel-hungry cars were hit by a near-doubling of road taxes today as the chancellor continued to target transport's contribution to carbon emissions.

Good idea. The US should institute a similar charge.

With the funds generated we can begin building high-speed rail to connect major cities.

High speed rail wont do much to solve the commuting problem. Most commuting nowadays is from one suburb to another suburb, with distances around 15 miles or less. High speed rail might be able to serve long haul commuters, but leave most everyone else outside the station, so to speak.
